It cannot be stressed how important it is to build competence in decentralized communication systems. In the aftermath of a major disaster, cellular networks are going to be overloaded, and blackouts mean the Internet won't be available. Learning about amateur (or "ham") radio should be a priority for every forward-thinking person. Resources are available online, and most hams are old dudes who just want somebody to talk to, so they're happy to share what they know. Some good resources:
